Milliron's Hero Research

Student Resources in Context: provides a premium selection of reference material, more than 1,100 full-text magazines and newspapers, primary sources, creative works, and multimedia, including video and audio clips in all core curriculum areas. PW: dogs
This one is nice because it sorts by the type of material.

Biography Reference Bank (EBSCO): Articles, most in full text, about more than a half-million people from around the world.
This one limits your search results, so that you are looking at articles that are mainly about the person and his/her life (not just any article that has their name in it).

Explora (Grades 9-12)(EBSCO): Learn more about your favorite subjects. Read magazines, newspapers, biographies, primary sources, country information. Find images for class projects and learn vocabulary.
This database will search ALL of EBSCO, so you will have to use more than just the person's name to search. Try adding keywords to narrow the results.

Salem History: E-book reference materials about 20th century decades: 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990's, Modern Scandals. Password: lakeviewhs
This is a great resource to give you a concise overview of your person. Search by their last name. Scroll to the bottom to read the "Impact" section, which explains why this person/event was important in American history.
With over 7,000 biographies and daily features that highlight newsworthy, compelling and surprising points-of-view, Biography.com is the digital sources for true stories about people that matter.
Search by your person's name. They may have some juicy feature stories about the heroes fall from grace, or they may just have an overview! Scroll to the bottom of the page for citation information.

How To "Read" Primary Sources . . . See, Think, Wonder

SIRS Decades: 20th century American primary sources including photos, political cartoons, maps, speeches, advertisements, etc. See the librarian for password.
This one is perfect for finding those primary documents. Try searching by your person's last name. You can see the original documents or print a transcript!

United Streaming Video (Discovery Education) Digital video-on-demand featuring cutting-edge high-quality content in the curriculum areas of science, math, health, language arts, social studies and more. See librarian for password.
You might be able to quote text evidence from a video clip (which might be your primary source); most of these have the transcript and an MLA citation!

LHS Writing Center . . . for helpful CLEW writing tips and citing your sources and creating a Works Cited Page!
