Structure and Facilities
The Lakeview School District came into being as a result of a consolidation of Bazetta Township and Cortland City Schools in 1956. The original Bazetta Building was built in 1929, the Cortland Building in 1923. Following the consolidation, strong growth in the district created the need for a new facility and in 1961 the Lakeview High School was built on a plot of thirty acres. A continuing increase in student population led to the construction of Lakeview Middle School in 1978. There are now four schools in the School District; one high school, one middle school and the two original buildings that now house elementary students, grades K through 4. In1994 a bond issue was passed to finance additions and renovations to the elementary and middle schools, as well as new media centers at all buildings and an auditorium at the high school. District facilities include athletic fields, two running tracks, one of which is an all-weather track, a maintenance garage, a transportation garage, and an outdoor land laboratory. All Lakeview School buildings have T1 hook-ups and the needed wiring to provide internet use.
High School
The High School was built in 1961. The High School expanded the second floor and built an addition to the south end of the building in 1963.
Another addition was added to the south end of the building in 1971. The 1995 additions and renovations include a new media/technology complex, auditorium, art complex, and student parking lot. The building has an elevator to assist students with special needs.
Middle School
The Middle School, built in 1978, is the newest of the Lakeview buildings. There is an elevator to assist students with special needs.
A recent Ohio Department of Education facilities study reports that the Cortland Elementary should be torn down and that the other buildings are in need of additional renovation. Due to the wealth of the community the state will provide less than 25% of the needed funds for this extensive renovation and building project. All four buildings, however, are still quite attractive and maintain pleasant learning environments. There are no present plans for new buildings or major renovations.
There is no present problem with over-crowding. The district has experienced an annual drop in enrollment for the past 7 years. In fiscal year 2002 the student count was 2,269 which represented a decrease of eighteen students from the fiscal year 2001 enrollment. The average class size for fiscal year 2002 was twenty-five students, and the average pupil/teacher ratio was 16.09 to 1. The School District has a total of 228 employees.
The district has a strong special education program that includes the orthopedic program for all of the Trumbull County school districts.
