Gavin Mauger and Cal Rinck sign letters of intent

April 12, 2022 - Two more Lakeview High School students have signed National Letters of Intent to play athletics at the college level. On Tuesday, April 12, 2022, both Gavin Mauger and Cal Rinck made things official when they put pen to paper in the lobby of Lakeview High School. Family, friends, and district staff were all on hand to celebrate the exciting occasion!

Senior Gavin Mauger will continue his football career at Grove City College, in Grove City, Pennsylvania next school year. Mauger visited several schools, and while he liked them all, he says Grove City felt most like home to him. After a couple of visits, football camps, and film sessions, Mauger’s recruitment grind came to a satisfying end when he got the call he made the roster. “I was ecstatic,” he says excitedly. “This is something I have dreamed about ever since I started playing in seventh grade. Anything is possible - keep your head in it and keep grinding, because when you make the choice to do something to better yourself, good things can happen!” Mauger is also a member of the basketball and baseball teams at Lakeview, and participates in National Honor Society and Student Council. While at Grove City, in addition to playing receiver for the Wolverines, he says he plans to study business.

Grove City College is a Division II school located in Western Pennsylvania. They are a member of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC).

Senior Cal Rinck has received a partial scholarship to play hockey at the University of Akron. Rinck, who has been playing hockey since second grade, says he’s extremely familiar with Akron’s program since he plays on a team out of the nearby Kent area. While he did visit a couple of schools, he says Akron felt most familiar to him, and he can’t wait to start the next phase of his hockey career. “I’m so excited, a little overwhelmed,” he says. “I really like Akron’s program. I know a lot of the coaches and some of the players, so I’m excited to get started with them. This is such a dream come true.” Currently, at Lakeview, Rinck is playing baseball for the Bulldogs, while looking forward to graduation. While at Akron, he plans to study accounting and hopes to one day own and operate his own business. He will play forward for the Zips hockey team.

The University of Akron is a member of the Mid-American Conference, and fields 17 NCAA Division I-A intercollegiate teams for men and women.

Congratulations Gavin and Cal - best wishes as you start your new chapters!

Zach Sulc Signs With Thiel College

February 22, 2022 - Lakeview High School senior Zach Sulc had all but given up on his dream of playing soccer at the collegiate level. “There were no offers, I wasn’t even looking,” he says. Though it wasn’t how he wanted his soccer career to end, Sulc had found his peace with it, knowing he gave the game his all. And then one last game changed everything. “I got invited to play in the Youngstown District All-Star game, that was kind of my last chance to get noticed by college scouts and coaches… and I did,” he remembers with a smile.

Thiel College coach Zack Walters was at the All-Star game that cold, snowy November day. Sulc says Walters connected with him after the game and then continued to stay in touch, inviting him to camps, practices, and workouts. Eventually, Sulc and his family made a formal visit, where the campus, and its academic standards, left big impressions on all of them. Still unsure of where his soccer career was heading, Sulc says he was also considering attending Kent State University, until Walters called with the invite to the Thiel team. “That was crazy, I was speechless, almost in tears,” Sulc remembers. “I for sure thought I wasn’t going to play, so this was a shock to me. I am so excited, I love playing soccer, and this is a dream come true.” Sulc made the dream reality when he signed his formal letter of intent with Thiel in the lobby of Lakeview High School on Tuesday, February 23, 2022.

Lakeview High School Varsity soccer Coach Nick Facciolo says, “Zach is a great player, he has played for us for four years, starting for two of them. I wish him the best of luck at Thiel, he’s going to make a heck of an impression on that program.”

Sulc began his soccer career at the age of three, playing in local rec leagues, eventually moving on to travel teams and the high school team at Lakeview. During his tenure at LHS he was a four-year varsity player, lettering three of those years; he has earned multiple league and district accolades, including first-team all league and first-team all district this past season. He served as the team’s captain this past year, spending the majority of his playing time at center and midfield. At school, Zach is a member of the Beta Club and executive committee. At Thiel he plans to study business, with a focus in sports marketing.

Located in western Pennsylvania, Thiel College is an independent liberal arts, sciences and professional studies institution. Thiel offers 24 varsity sports and participates in NCAA Division III Athletics within the Presidential Athletic Conference (PAC).

For all of the younger players that have dreams like his, Sulc says, “Never give up, keep working, especially in the off-season… you just never know.” Congratulations Zach and good luck at Thiel!
